Rowland James (1968 – ) was an LDS church member in Lansing, Michigan; pleaded guilty to charges related to alleged sexual abuse of young girls and a young boy he met at church; serving time in prison as of January 2024.

Rowland Wayne James was an LDS church member in Lansing and Adrian, Michigan.

He was convicted in three separate cases. In 2001 and 2017, he was convicted of sexually abused young children he met at church. In 1997, James was convicted of criminal sexual conduct, the age of the victim is unknown.

James is currently serving at Gus Harrison Correctional Facility, in Adrian, Michigan. Earliest Release Date: 12/20/2051

No justice for an abuse victim

Sara (a pseudonym to protect her identity) told FLOODLIT that Rowland James sexually abused her sometime between 1990-1992, before molesting the girls for whose abuse he was convicted in 2001.

Sara’s father was assigned by the bishop in their ward to mentor James, which is when the abuse happened

James’s 1997 conviction uses Code 750520C-B to describe his conviction, which according to Michigan legislature is criminal sexual conduct in the second degree/felony.

FLOODLIT communicated with Ellen (pseudonym), a person familiar with James. The following timeline comes from Ellen’s account:

  • Prior to 1997: James married a woman and was sealed to her in an LDS temple. They divorced sometime prior to 2015.
  • Between 1997 and 2001: James was excommunicated by the Mormon church.
  • 2001: Rowland told Ellen he was attending an LDS ward in Lansing, Michigan. Rowland stated he met his two victims at this LDS church.
  • 2011: Ellen said ward members encouraged her to date James because he was active LDS, indicating that they believed it would be better for Ellen to date a reformed pedophile than a non-member. Ellen does not recall any warnings given to the members of James’s sexual abuse history.
  • 2011: James began attending Adrian Michigan Ward, and was working towards rebaptism with his bishop at the time.
  • Between 2011 and 2015: James married a woman a local church member in the area.
  • Between 2011 and 2017: James sexually abused two children.

    JACKSON, MI - Rowland James didn't ask the court for forgiveness when he admitted to becoming the monster he knew he was at his sentencing Wednesday.

    "I have no excuse for what I've done," James said April 19 in Jackson County Circuit Court. "Look at my record. I'm worried about what will happen to victims of my actions and can happen (if I'm free)."

    Circuit Court Judge John McBain sentenced James, 48, to 35 to 60 years in prison as a habitual offender. He was charged with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a victim younger than 13.

    James confessed that on or about Nov. 26, 2016, in a home in Jackson, he performed oral sex on an 11-year-old boy and admitted that this was not his first conviction for criminal sexual conduct.

    In March Rowland James pleaded guilty to Criminal Sexual Conduct 1st Degree involving a person under 13.

    Today Judge John McBain sentenced James to 35 to 60 years in prison.
