Download: 2025 sexual abuse lawsuit v. Mormon OB/GYN David Broadbent
FLOODLIT has covered the unfolding criminal and civil litigation against former Provo, Utah OB/GYN David Broadbent since we launched in 2022, about a year after a woman shared her experience as his patient during a December 2021 Mormon Stories podcast episode (When High-Level Mormon Church Leaders Sexually Abuse: ep. 1520).
(Thank you to John Dehlin for providing a platform where that disclosure could take place and so many people could connect over similar experiences.)
The newest lawsuit, filed June 13 in Utah County (4th District Court), appears to involve a different set of over 200 plaintiffs than the one filed in 2022 (217 plaintiffs). The documents were unclear on that, but the reported ages of the victims, the nature of the allegations, and the years in which the offenses allegedly occurred all appear to us to be different between the two lawsuits.
Either way, hundreds of women and girls (either 211+ or 428+) have said they were sexually assaulted by a doctor whose office was located only one block from the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah.
If anything like this happened to you, you are not alone, and it was not your fault.
Some of the new charges and accusations filed this month:
- During a high-risk pregnancy in 2020, a woman saw Broadbent nine times. During every visit except the first, Broadbent allegedly “grabbed and squished both of [her] breasts at the same time, one breast in each ungloved hand. The defendant told TR that he was checking for cancer.” (source: police statement)
- During a 2004 “pre-marital exam,” Broadbent allegedly “felt up” a patient’s vagina “about 5 times before saying that she either she was lying about not having had sex or that she must have been taken advantage of as a child because her cherry was popped. The defendant then said he needed to look at [her] breasts […] and then sucked on her nipple.”‘
- At least 14 women said Broadbent told them their husbands or future husbands were “lucky” because of their breasts, vaginal tightness, or other physical characteristics.
