HAPPY ANNIVERSARY FLOODLIT
Floodlit.org acknowledging 3 years of documenting sexual abuse in the Mormon church
Floodlit launched three years ago today.
In our effort to help shine a light on the sexual abuse problem in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we
(Floodlit.org) have listed 4,132 documented cases of alleged abuse, written 221 posts, and published 93 separate content pages.
We have written over 170 educational articles. The longest article is 6,021 words (about 12 single-spaced pages). We’ve sited 6,255 sources…chock full of court documents and news articles and sex offender registry listings.
We’ve collected 33,475 documents, over 90% of which come from court cases. By now, all the original reporting we’ve produced would be equivalent to about a 500-page book, and the case reports we’ve written would fill at least 12 books of 500 pages each.
A law journal and various academic articles have quoted or cited our work.
We have been entrusted and honored to hear the stories of the darkest moments from thousands of individuals who fell victim to abuse and had no choice but to transform into survivors as a result.
Our website was featured in a Bravo docuseries last month, Surviving Mormonism with Heather Gay, that explored some of these survivors’ stories.
Floodlit was created as a therapeutic tool to help me heal from abuse from one of my sexual abusers. And later became the same tool for Charlie to help him start to heal from his own sexual abuse trauma. Both of us experienced sexual abuse at the hands of Mormons.
When we first began we had no idea the sheer volume and heart wrenching stories, some…we would find and others that were shared with us.
We were astonished when the names came flooding in on day one, December 1, 2022…and even years later as we are slogging through our backlog of thousands of names and stories.
We are still surprised every day. In just the last seven days alone, we have received at least 86 email submissions of accused individuals…every one of them unique, and none of them are listed in our database.
In addition, we’ve received at least 15-20 messages on social media about other individuals…again, all unique and not listed.
We, like many of you, feel everyone has the right to exist freely of abuse.
We celebrate in a bittersweet way, the shining of a light and the positive impact that we have been able to achieve, even as we remember with sadness the people who have been affected by this systemic issue.
We remember the survivors and we thank you for your continued support and trust.
We hope that through this website, other survivors may experience some sort of healing and peace knowing that we see you, we are fighting for you and we love you.
