Local LDS church leaders knew of Treter’s criminal behavior but did not report to police, according to a person familiar with the case.

from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on 2019-09-25:

“A Greendale man has been accused of sexually assaulting three teenage boys over a 13-year period.

Mark C. Treter, 65, has been charged with three felony counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child, two of which came against a child under the age of 16, according to online court records. If convicted, he faces up to 60 years in prison and $30,000 in fines.

He is free on a $25,000 cash bond he posted Sept. 21 but has been forbidden from having any contact with children, according to online court records. He is due back in court Sept. 27 for a preliminary hearing.

The criminal complaint, filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, outlines how Treter would have the three boys, who were between the ages of 12 and 16 at the time, regularly sleep at his Greendale home on separate occasions between 1992 and 2005.

All three victims said Treter repeatedly touched them inappropriately during those visits, while two said that he also performed a sexual act on them, the complaint said.

It’s unclear how Treter knew the victims, but one of them told police he first met Treter at church, the complaint said. Another one first met him when he was 8 years old.

In a September interview with police, Treter admitted to touching two of the victims, but denied ever performing a sex act, the complaint said.”
