Sheril Burton was a Mormon living in Orem, Utah, and as well as working as a BYU microbiology professor in Provo, Utah.
In 1990, Burton was charged with four counts of sex-related crimes.
March 8, 1990 charges:
-FORCIBLE SEXUAL ABUSE – 2nd Degree Felony
-FORCIBLE SEXUAL ABUSE – 2nd Degree Felony
-INCEST – 3rd Degree Felony
-INCEST – 3rd Degree Felony
This case was transferred was Bound Over District and new charges came about two months later.
May 2, 1990 charges:
-SEX ABUSE CHILD – 2nd Degree Felony /pleaded guilty/ sentenced 1-15 years
-SEX ABUSE CHILD – 2nd Degree Felony/ pleaded guilty/ sentenced 1-15 years
-INCEST – 3rd Degree Felony/ pleaded guilty/ sentenced up to five years
-INCEST – 3rd Degree Felony/ pleaded guilty/ sentenced up to five years
*Incest charges were for incidents that occurred between June and August 1988.
May 17, 1990 charges:
Protective order against Sheril Burton for domestic abuse.
Burton taught as a professor of microbiology at BYU since 1967.
Charges were brought against Burton in March/May of 1990.
In one of The Daily Herald articles about Burton’s sex abuse charges “A spokesman for the Mormon church– owned school, Paul Richards, said Burton had resigned and has not taught at the University since winter semester.”
However, in a second article by The Daily Herald it states “According to Paul Richards of BYU communications, Burton has retired from the University where he taught since 1967.”
A quick search show’s BYU’s winter semester is from January-April. So it according to Richards statement, Burton worked at BYU until sometime between January-April 1991. Which was around one year after the sexual abuse charges were brought against him. But a profile for Sheril Burton at Research Gate shows he worked at BYU until August 1991, the same month Paul Richards stated in The Daily Herald articles that Burton had stopped working or retired months prior.
Burton is not a registered sex offender, but lives in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

3. Former BYU sentenced in abuse case
Provo, Utah –a formal professor at Brigham Young university has been sentenced to prison terms about the 15 years for child sexual abuse, court authorities reported Monday.
Fourth district judge: Christensen sentenced Sheril Burton to one to 15 years in prison each of two counts of sexual abuse of a child, and up to five years on each of two other sexual abuse– related felonies.
He also ordered Burton, 56, Orem, to pay $7500 in fines and fees. Burton pleaded guilty to the charges June 14.
The sentencing last week came after several of Burton's victims testified they are afraid Burton might continue the sexual abuse of children and they did not want him to be released.
Burton's attorney, Gary Weight, told Christensen that he was hearing only one side and that many people have shown support for his client.
Ask Christensen to follow the recommendation of the adult probation and parole agency for one year in the county jail with a period of therapy after release.
But Christensen refused to follow that recommendation, saying the aggravating circumstances of Burton's crimes far outweighed some mitigating circumstances brought out in court.
Burton have been teaching microbiology at BYU since 1967.
A spokesman for the Mormon church– own school, Paul Richards, said Burton had resigned and has not taught at the University since winter semester.

Christensen sentenced Sheril Dale Burton, 56, Orem, to one to 15 years in prison on each of two counts of sexual abuse of a child, second-degree felonies, and up to five years in prison on each of two other abuse-related third-degree felonies. He also ordered Burton to pay $7,500 in fines and fees. Burton pleaded guilty to the charges June 14.Christensen's sentence in 4th District Court came after several of Burton's victims testified they are afraid Burton may continue the abuse and they don't want him free.
Burton's attorney, Gary Weight, told Christensen that he was only hearing one side and that many people support Burton. He asked Christensen to follow Adult Probation and Parole's recommendation for one year in the county jail with therapy release. He said the recommendation was made by professionals and is unbiased.
Christensen refused to follow the recommendation made by Adult Probation and Parole, saying the aggravating circumstances far outweigh the mitigating circumstances.

9. Ex-BYU professor sentenced on abuse charges
By Kayleen Nelson
Harold Senior ReporterA former BYU microbiology professor has been ordered to prison on charges of sexual abuse and incest.
Sheril Burton, 55, of Orem, was before Judge Cullen Y. Christensen in 4th District Court Friday afternoon for sentencing. After listening to testimony from victims and others, Christensen went over the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, finally determining that Burton should go to prison.
He ordered Burton to report to the county jail AUG. 19 at 9 AM. For transportation to the prison, but told him he could appeal the sentence if he wanted.
Burton was ordered to prison for one to 15 years on each of to second – degree sexual abuse charges after five years on each of two incest charges. He was ordered to pay $7500 in fines and fees plus restitution for counseling and treatment of the victims.
Christensen denied the motion for sentencing Burton under the next lower category.
According to Paul Richards of BYU communications, Burton has retired from the University where he taught since 1967.
Five people ask Christensen to ignore the recommendation of probation on work release jail time that came from adult probation and parole. One said she was scared of Burton and what he might do to her but came forward anyway. "I would put myself in peril to save others at this point, quote she said, noting the abuse occurred for more than 20 years.
Another said she was also afraid he could contact her. "I just wanted to go to jail and be away from me for the rest of my life." "He's hurt all of us," said another. "I don't want him to be able to hurt us again."
"I'm not angry," said one victim. "I'm just hurt."
His wife said Burton violated her children while she was at church meetings or otherwise away from home. "there's a lot of good in Sheril Burton; that's hard for me to say," she said. "there's also a lot of evil and the amount of evil that murdered my children. Mentally and their souls have been murdered."
She said she two feared he would contact the family and try to regain control.
Two spoke up for Burton. One said he was told one of the victims would kill Burton and then herself if he did not go to jail. Another said one of the children said the abuse have not gone on for the last 12 years.
Burton, Hannah zone defense, said he had several people tell him the victims had said they would lie if that's what it took to put him away.

Reusing flowback water and produced water from active wells becomes more and more important in today's oil and gas operations to control surface water volumes in order to keep surface water disposal costs (reinjection or trucking off the premises) to a minimum - especially in operations that do not require secondary lift support. However, reusing u...
