According to a report submitted to FLOODLIT, Erler married a recent convert and formally adopted her young daughter, then sexually abused the girl over a period of years as she approached puberty, using caretaking activities to obtain time alone with her.

The reporting party states that he simultaneously built a narrative among family and ward members that the child was troubled and hypersexual, and that church leaders were aware of the allegations. Pennsylvania court records show a criminal case filed against Erler in Franklin County in 2014; a second case from the 1990s is said to involve another victim.
