Russell Nelson was president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 2018 until his death in 2025.
During Nelson’s tenure, the church implemented a policy change allowing minors to have a trusted adult with them when meeting for private interviews with a bishop.
During regular interviews with Mormon youth, bishops routinely ask questions regarding whether they obey the law of chastity, the church’s teachings on sexual purity.
The church excommunicated former bishop Sam Young after he campaigned to end private one-on-one discussions of sex between Mormon bishops and children in their congregations.
