Bravo’s series, Surviving Mormonism, features stories of people who experienced various kinds of trauma and abuse in Mormonism.
We recognized two of them on sight in a 30-second teaser; their father, a convicted sexual abuser, is listed in our database at Floodlit. They are heroes to us.
Since the show’s announcement, many Latter-day Saints have shared, often in a tongue-in-cheek way, how Mormonism has impacted them.
To them, we would ask: Please remember those for whom “Surviving” is a real, often painful, often daily battle.
Hashtags come and go, but Surviving, for many, is an eternal struggle.
If you are a Survivor, or you see pieces of your own life reflected in the stories presented by the show, please know you are not alone.
You may find yourself in the church, out of it, or somewhere in the middle.
Wherever you are, whatever you’ve been through and however you decide to navigate life, just please know that:
Your life is valuable.
You deserve to be heard and supported.
Your courage is inspiring.
If you are not a Survivor, please consider the lifelong injuries and burdens one may carry. There is a very real reason they are called Survivors.
And there are so, so many. So please be kind, sensitive and supportive.
