Craig Capron was a podiatrist and Mormon branch president in Nebraska, and later a ward/stake executive secretary in Wyoming.
In 2024, Capron, then 59, was charged with 10 counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor in Campbell County. Five of those counts happened between August 2015 and August 2016, and the other five took place in May 2017. All 10 counts involved the same victim.
While that case was going through court proceedings in Campbell County, another eight charges were brought against Capron of sexual abuse of a minor in Converse County — two counts were first-degree sexual abuse, five were second-degree sexual abuse and one count was third-degree sexual abuse. They were from as early as 2015 and as recent as 2023.
Capron pleaded guilty to four counts in Campbell, and the other six counts the state agreed to dismiss. In addition, Capron pleaded guilty to one count in Converse County and the other seven charges were dismissed.
Capron was a Mormon branch president in Macy, Nebraska from 1999 to 2002. That branch has since been closed.
Capron was a stake executive secretary in Gillette from 2012 to 2015, and a ward executive secretary in Gillette from 2019 to 2022.
During the Wyoming criminal investigation, police found index cards written by Capron, which they said showed that he was looking to find ways to avoid law enforcement getting involved, and resolving accusations that he had sexually abused a child or children.
Some of the notes police said they found said:
- “Hard to repent”
- “Have to try on your own. B/c as soon as you try counseling, or eccliastical (sic) leader, or 7 step program it is reported and you are in a situation with law. Try to do this as a family, and work through it.”
According to law enforcement, Capron also searched on his computer for:
- “do you have to pay a lawyer for it to be confidential”
- “Eight Things You Shouldn’t Say to Your Lawyer.”
- “what happens to my 401k if I lose my job” (searched five times)
- what happens to one’s 401(k) if that person is sentenced to life in prison
- “how long is a life sentence”
- “computer destroy service”
Floodlit received a report from a person who said they attended the same LDS ward as Capron for years in Wyoming, and that Capron was a stake high council member during some of that time.

2. Man pleads guilty to four counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor
A podiatrist who practiced in Gillette and Douglas was accused of sexually abusing a girl over the span of eight years, and he has pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor.
Craig Capron, 59, had been charged with 10 counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor. Five of those counts happened between August 2015 and August 2016, and the other five took place in May 2017. All 10 counts had the same victim.
In the four counts that Capron pleaded guilty to, he was accused of groping a girl over and under her clothes and masturbating on her thighs.
In exchange for Capron’s guilty plea, the state will agree to dismiss the six other counts that he’s been charged with, and the state will recommend a six- to 12-year prison sentence, followed by a supervised probationary period.
Second-degree sexual abuse of a minor in Wyoming carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
Capron had previously pleaded not guilty on July 29.
In May 2024, someone called the Sheriff’s Office after a girl reported that her friend said she had been sexually abused by Capron several times over the past few years.
The girl told deputies that she and the victim met at the Rec Center and they became friends. The victim told the friend’s younger sister that Capron had made her take off her clothes and lie naked with him when she was seven years old.
The friend later talked to the victim about the sexual abuse. The friend had assumed it had only happened once, but the victim said Capron had sexually abused her on many occasions, most recently in July 2023.
The victim said that when Capron sexually abused her the first time, when she was seven years old, she was too young to understand what was going on. But when she was nine or 10 years old, she learned that what he was doing to her was wrong.
The victim said Capron sexually abused her for eight years, from August 2015 to July 2023. She said Capron would touch her in “inappropriate places,” groping her chest and crotch area both under and over her clothes.
The victim said Capron would take a shower after the encounters, and that on occasion he would make her shower with him.
From ages seven to 11, the victim said Capron would rape her, but he stopped doing this when she turned 12, according to court documents. He kept on sexually abusing her, however.
She recalled Capron telling her not to tell anyone because he would get in trouble, and that while he was abusing her he would say, “I just want what’s best for you.”
The victim said that in May 2017, Capron touched her and masturbated. He stopped abusing her because he got “too tired,” she said.
The most recent sexual abuse allegedly occurred in July 2023. The victim told her mom about this sexual abuse, and when the mother confronted Capron about it, he admitted that he had touched the girl’s breasts several times, and that when she was taking a bath, he got into the bathtub with her and touched her.
The victim’s mother told law enforcement that she had no knowledge that Capron had been sexually abusing her daughter, and she spoke with her daughter for a few minutes and determined that the victim was telling the truth.
Capron denied having sex with the victim but admitted to being in a “sexual position” with her. He apologized to the victim’s mother, saying he was “super sorry.”
Capron had previously been accused of sexual abuse more than 20 years earlier. According to court documents, Capron was caught sexually abusing a 4-year-old girl while he was living in another state, and that this abuse was reported to law enforcement but nothing ever came of it. His church was aware of these allegations and prohibited Capron from teaching children in any capacity.

3. Man charged with eight more counts of sexual abuse in Converse County
GILLETTE (WNE) — A podiatrist who had pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual abuse of a minor in Campbell County has been arrested on eight new sexual abuse charges, this time out of Converse County.
Craig Capron has been charged in the Circuit Court of the 8th Judicial District with eight counts of sexual abuse of a minor. Two of the counts are first-degree sexual abuse, five are second-degree sexual abuse and one count is third-degree. They stem from incidents from as early as 2015 and as recent as 2023.
Capron, 59, had been charged with 10 counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor in Campbell County. Five of those counts happened between August 2015 and August 2016, and the other five took place in May 2017. All 10 counts had the same victim.
This fall, Capron pleaded guilty to four of those counts.
In exchange for his guilty plea, the state had agreed to dismiss the six other counts that he’s been charged with, and the state would recommend a six- to 12-year prison sentence, followed by a supervised probationary period.
This was before the charges in Converse County were brought forward. Capron has not yet been sentenced in the Campbell County case.
In May 2024, someone called the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office after a girl reported that her friend said she had been sexually abused by Capron several times over the past few years, both in Gillette and in Douglas.

4. Former doctor pleads guilty to one of eight counts of sexual abuse in Converse County
A former podiatrist who was sentenced to prison earlier this year for sexual abuse of a minor pleaded guilty last month to one more count of sexual abuse.
In January, Craig Capron, 60, was sentenced to six to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to four of 10 counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor in Campbell County. Five of those counts happened between August 2015 and August 2016, and the other five took place in May 2017. All 10 counts had the same victim.
While his case in Campbell County was moving through the courts system, he was charged in Converse County with eight more counts of sexual abuse of a minor — two counts were first-degree sexual abuse, five were second-degree sexual abuse and one count was third-degree sexual abuse. They were from as early as 2015 and as recent as 2023.
He had been set to go to trial this week, and the victim and her mother had been subpoenaed so they would have to testify. But Capron pleaded guilty in mid-July to one count of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor. In exchange, the state dismissed the seven other charges.
A sentencing date and a plea agreement were not available on the courts’ electronic docket system as of Thursday afternoon.
After Capron was sentenced in Campbell County, but before he pleaded guilty in the Converse County case, the state said it would seek a sentencing enhancement, and it amended the criminal information to include the maximum penalty for the crimes, which is life in prison without parole.
In May 2024, someone called the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office after a girl reported that her friend said she had been sexually abused by Capron several times over the past few years, both in Gillette and in Douglas.
When investigators asked Capron whether he had sexual contact with the girl, he said, “Not that I can remember.” He admitted to touching her under her clothes but denied having sex with her.
But the victim told investigators that Capron did have sex with her in Douglas after the first few times he sexually abused her. She said she was too young to know what was going on when he first did it, and that she was uncomfortable and scared.
She said the last time Capron sexually abused her was July 2023. She told her mom about this sexual abuse that summer, and when the mother confronted Capron about it, he admitted that he had touched the girl’s breasts several times, and that when she was taking a bath, he got into the bathtub with her and touched her.
Capron denied having sex with the victim but admitted to being in a “sexual position” with her. He apologized to the girl’s mother, saying he was “super sorry.”
Capron had previously been accused of sexual abuse more than 20 years earlier. According to court documents, Capron was caught sexually abusing a 4-year-old girl while he was living in another state, and that this abuse was reported to law enforcement but nothing ever came of it. He also sexually abused two other girls.
His church was aware of these allegations and prohibited Capron from teaching children in any capacity.
On May 30, 2024, investigators searched Capron’s home, where they found index cards with what was later identified as his handwriting.
On one card, he wrote observations on the victim’s behavior. On another, he wrote about finding ways to resolve the situation without getting on law enforcement’s radar.
“Hard to repent,” Capron wrote. “Have to try on your own. B/c as soon as you try counseling, or eccliastical (sic) leader, or 7 step program it is reported and you are in a situation with law. Try to do this as a family, and work through it.”
Investigators also got ahold of Capron’s search history from May 19-22 of this year, which was the same time that the sexual abuse was reported to authorities. They found several deleted internet searches.
On May 19, Capron searched for Gillette lawyers, Wyoming’s sexual assault laws, penalties for sexual assault, and whether sex assault charges cross state lines.
On May 20, on three occasions he searched, “do you have to pay a lawyer for it to be confidential.” He also searched, “Eight Things You Shouldn’t Say to Your Lawyer.” He also searched for criminal defense lawyers in Gillette, Casper and Douglas.
Later that day, he searched, “what happens to my 401k if I lose my job” five times, and he also wondered what happens to one’s 401(k) if that person is sentenced to life in prison.
On May 21, he searched, “how long is a life sentence.” And on May 22, he searched, “computer destroy service.”
