Charles Grant Merrell AKA “Chuck” was a Mormon church member in the Star Valley area of Wyoming, residing in Osmond.
Merrell was booked into the Lincoln County Detention Center in August 2025 on charges that included domestic battery and unlawful contact, and was separately charged with sexual abuse of a minor. Prosecutors alleged he took inappropriate liberties with a victim under 17 on two occasions, one around October 2021 and another around September 2023.
A two-day jury trial in Kemmerer District Court concluded October 30, 2025, and after about four hours of deliberation, the jury found Merrell guilty on both counts of third-degree sexual abuse of a minor, an offense carrying up to 15 years per count. His defense attorney, James Sanderson, declined to comment on the verdict; Lincoln County Attorney Spencer Allred thanked local law enforcement and his office for their work on the case.
On November 24, 2025, District Court Judge Joseph Bluemel sentenced Merrell to 3-to-6 years in prison on each count, to run concurrently, plus $475 in fines and fees. He is now incarcerated at the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, with a parole eligibility date of October 28, 2027, and a projected discharge date of October 31, 2029. He was added to the Wyoming Sex Offender Registry on February 10, 2026, with lifetime registration status.

A District Court jury in Kemmerer has found a Star Valley man to be guilty on two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree. Charles “Chuck” Merrell, 48 of Osmond, remains in custody in the Lincoln County Detention Center in Kemmerer.
The two day trial concluded on Thursday, October 30. The verdict was read at approximately 3:00 p.m. after roughly four hours of deliberation by the jury.
Court documents state that Merrell knowingly “Took immodest, immoral or indecent liberties” with a minor under the age of 17 on two separate occasions on or before the dates of October of 2021 and September of 2023. According to Statutory Authority, a person convicted of sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree is “subject to imprisonment for not more than 15 years.” Sentencing will be scheduled in the coming weeks.
“As counsel for Mr. Merrell, I cannot comment on the outcome of the trial at this time,” Defense Attorney James Sanderson told SVI Media.
Lincoln County Attorney Spencer Allred provided a brief statement, saying “I would like to thank our local law enforcement officers and those in my office for their hard work in bringing this case together.”

A sentencing was given to Osmond resident Charles “Chuck” Merrell, 48, on Monday, November 24 in District Court. The sentencing followed Merrell’s conviction during a jury trial, where he was found guilty of two counts of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the 3rd Degree.
At the conclusion of the hearing, District Court Judge Joseph Bluemel sentenced Merrell to 3-6 years prison for each count, to be served concurrently, along with a total of $475 in court fines and fees.
