3. Former teacher, scout leader sentenced for child pornography charges
OGDEN, Utah -- The bizarre tale of a former Ogden School teacher and Boy Scout leader accused of sexually abusing a child more than 30 years ago has come to end.
Kenneth Prince's fate changed when the abuse charges against him were dropped and he was instead nabbed on possession of child pornography.
FOX 13 News heard from the former science teacher for the first time since his arrest, saying he was sorry. The 61-year-old is sentenced to serve 1 to 15 years in the Utah State Prison on five charges of having child porn on his computer.
"I want to express my sorrow," said Prince from inside the Ogden courtroom before his sentencing.
He was arrested in fall of last year on two separate cases: child porn and child sex abuse. The sex abuse charges were dropped after a plea deal with prosecutors. Once a Scout Leader in the 80s, Prince blamed his behavior on a painful past, saying he was sexually abused as a child.
"They told me I needed therapy,” he said. “I knew I needed it, but I didn't know how to go about it. The therapy I wanted to be as honest as I could. I wanted to tell the truth, I know I needed it."
"Mr. Prince admitted to possessing five images of child pornography and that's what he's being sentenced for," said Russell Farr, one of his defense attorneys.
His other defense attorney, Stephen Farr, said, "Five counts of possession of child pornography is 210 days."
Prosecutors, who would not comment to FOX 13 News after the four-hour hearing, pressed the judge for a stiffer sentence.
"This was in the 80s that he continued to take pictures of young men, and this wasn't a one-time occasion, this went on for years while he was a school teacher," said the prosecution during the hearing.
Prince, who pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual exploitation of minor for the child porn on his computer will serve 1 to 15 years for each sentence, all at the same time. The prosecution didn't get what they wanted, and neither did the defense.
"I'm just disappointed," Russell Farr said.
He went on to say that his client, who tried to kill himself by ingesting mercury after bailing out of jail last year, will get the help he needs in prison.
"He seems to be doing alright; he seems to have good spirits and I think he'll be okay,” he said.
How much time Prince serves in prison will be up to the Board of Pardons. The court recommended Prince be considered for mental health treatment while at the prison.

4. Ex-Boy Scout leader at parole hearing: I no longer blame my victims
UTAH STATE PRISON — Kenneth Prince acknowledges now that it was no excuse.
But back then, he said he began molesting and sexually exploiting young boys and young men because he had "needs."
"After my last daughter was born, my wife didn't want to have sex anymore. And I had some needs. Especially when my doctor put me on testosterone replacement therapy because of the cancer. That's not an excuse. It was stupid. It's not a good excuse or any excuse at all. But that's the way I felt at that time. I don't now," a repentant Prince said Thursday at the Utah State Prison.
On Thursday, Prince attended his first parole hearing since being sentenced to one to 15 years at the prison after pleading guilty to five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony. As part of his plea deal, two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony, were dismissed.
Prince, 63, was a teacher in South Ogden for 31 years. He has a master's degree in education. Prince was also a Boy Scout leader.
But starting in 1983, Prince lived a double life as a respectable teacher and community leader who developed an addiction to pornography. That porn addiction progressed to taking explicit pictures of adolescent boys.
Speaking at his parole hearing Thursday, Prince told Board of Pardons and Parole member Pat Nolan about his health problems, which included testicular cancer and Type 2 diabetes caused by chemotherapy.
"My health has also been affected by a very poor choice that I did after I was first arrested. I didn't want to come here so I thought that I'd drink a cup of mercury," he said.
In 2008, Prince was arrested at a Salt Lake gym after police discovered him committing a "lewd act." Shortly after, he was forced to retire from South Ogden Junior High where he had taught since 1979.
He survived drinking mercury. But in September of 2013, South Ogden police found sexually explicit photos of boys under 18 on laptops at his house. The investigation began after a man reported to police that he had been sexually abused by Prince more than a decade earlier.
Back then, Prince said he blamed his victims for his arrest.
"At that time, that's the way I felt. Since that time things have changed a lot," he said. "I would have to say I take full responsibly for my stupid actions."
Prince received therapy before being sent to prison, and today said that being arrested was actually a good thing.
"I just didn't realize I was going down a whirlpool," said Prince, who said he no longer blames his victims.
"You were the adult," Nolan said.
"I was the idiot," Prince interjected.
"That too," Nolan replied.
Nolan reminded Prince that for the parole board to even consider releasing him, he would have to successfully complete sex offender treatment while in prison. Prince said he has been on a waiting list since entering prison but hasn't been given the opportunity to begin taking those classes.
He asked if it might be possible to resume treatment outside of prison, something he said he'd be willing to pay for and something he felt he was benefitting from before being sent to prison.
Nolan acknowledged that continuing treatment outside of prison might be something the board would look at in the future. But for likely the next five years at minimum, he said the board will probably require him to stay in prison and complete the treatment programs there.
The full five-member board is expected to vote in the coming weeks on when to give Prince a new parole hearing date. Email: preavy@deseretnews.com Twitter: DNewsCrimeTeam

5. Ex-Scout leader sentenced to prison for child porn
Courts • Kenneth Prince took photos of nude Boy Scouts over 30-year period.
Ogden • For 2nd District Judge Ernie Jones, how to sentence a former teacher and Boy Scout leader for possessing child pornography boiled down to one question: Is he a threat to the community?
Attorneys painted two very different pictures of Kenneth William Prince during his four-hour sentencing hearing Thursday: Prosecutors portrayed him as a sexually deviant man who took pictures of nude Boy Scouts during camping trips over a 30-year period, while defense attorneys instead told of a man who was a great teacher and leader, whose own abuse experiences and mental health issues caused him to struggle with his own sexual identity.
But ultimately, Judge Jones decided that Prince was indeed a danger to the community, and sentenced the former Ogden teacher to five concurrent 1-to-15 year prison terms.
"On the surface, Mr. Prince seems like a nice guy," Jones said just before handing down the sentence. "But my impression after reading all the reports is that under the surface, there is a totally different person."
Prince, 61, pleaded guilty in February to five counts of second-degree felony sexual exploitation of a minor. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dismissed another case where Prince was charged with two counts of first-degree felony aggravated sexual abuse of a child.
In that case, the alleged abuse victim, now 42 years old, told a South Ogden police officer that Prince performed sexual acts on him multiple times when he was between 12 and 17 years old, according to a probable cause statement filed in court.
Prince admitted to that abuse, and admitted to having a number of child pornography images on his home computer — found after family members contacted police in September.
Deputy Weber County Attorney Letitia Toombs told the judge Thursday that one of the images found at Prince's home was an old printed picture that appeared to have been taken in the 1980s by Prince of a young Boy Scout "mooning" the camera. She said Prince allegedly admitted to using that photo for sexual gratification.
Toombs also told the judge that after Prince's arrest was reported in the media, South Ogden police were "inundated" with calls from other potential victims. She advocated for a prison sentence, but added that the victim in the case — who wasn't in court Thursday — didn't have a particular recommendation.
"He said he has moved on," Toombs said. "He has moved past it. He's going to leave this up to the criminal justice system. He just wants the community and his son to be safe."
But Prince's attorneys pointed out that no further charges had been filed against their client regarding any new allegations, and asked the judge instead to focus on the crimes to which Prince had plead guilty to. They asked for 210 days in jail and the opportunity to continue therapy.
"When confronted [by police], he was honest," defense attorney Stephen Farr said. "He was responsible. I think there is a good side to Ken Prince."
Farr told the judge that he himself was also a Scout leader, and had worked side-by-side with Prince more than 30 years ago. He said his client was a great teacher and Scout leader — "the best there ever was."
"I never saw that," Farr said of any sexual deviancy. "There was no sexual misbehavior. He was just an Indiana Jones-type. Just an adventurer."
Prince said in court Thursday that he "wanted to express his sorrow" to the abuse victim, and said he took the plea deal so the man would not have to testify. He asked the judge for mercy, saying he wanted to continue therapy and work toward repairing relationships within his family.
"I know I've been needing [help,]" he said. "…I've been living a lie for some period of time."
The day after Prince was arrested, the former science teacher bailed out of jail and tried to kill himself by ingesting mercury, according to police.
After that suicide attempt, he was charged in 1st District Court with misdemeanor reckless endangerment and use or possession of a psychotoxic chemical. An arraignment has been set in that case for May 27.
The suicide attempt delayed Prince's initial court appearance in the child porn case because health officials recommended he be quarantined to prevent the risk of contaminating others with mercury poisoning, according to court documents.
Prince was employed as a teacher at South Ogden Junior High School from 1979 to 2008. Police said he also had been a Boy Scout leader for many years in the South Ogden area.

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A former teacher and Boy Scout leader in Utah has been sentenced to prison for possession of child pornography.
Second District Judge Ernie Jones on Thursday handed down five concurrent 1- to 15-year prison terms to 62-year-old Kenneth Prince.
Prince, who was a high school science teacher in South Ogden for 29 years and a local Boy Scout leader, pleaded guilty earlier this year to five counts of exploitation of a minor as a result of possessing child pornography.
Another charge of aggravated sexual abuse of a child 30 years ago was dropped as part of his plea deal with prosecutors.
Prince told Jones he was abused by an older relative for an extended period of time beginning at the age of 7.

8. Former teacher, Boy Scout leader arrested on more sex abuse charges
SOUTH OGDEN — A former schoolteacher and Boy Scout leader already facing multiple charges of child pornography has been arrested again.
On Monday, South Ogden police arrested Kenneth William Prince, 61, for investigation of two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and booked him into the Weber County Jail. Prince has since posted bail and was released.
On Sept. 26, Prince was charged in Ogden's 2nd District Court with five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, all second-degree felonies.
After he was arrested and posted bail, Prince was hospitalized for ingesting mercury in an apparent suicide attempt. Last week, he was charged with reckless endangerment and psychotoxic abuse, both misdemeanors, in Logan District Court.
His wife filed for divorce on Oct. 9, according to court records.
The alleged abuse that lead to Prince's latest arrest happened several years ago, according to police.
"South Ogden investigators believe there are additional victims and are encouraging others to call 801-629-8221 if they are a victim or know of a possible victim."
At least eight other potential victims contacted police after his first arrest. South Ogden investigators believe there are additional victims and are encouraging others to call 801-629-8221 if they are a victim or know of a possible victim.

11. Former Ogden teacher, Boy Scout leader arrested for allegedly possessing child porn

and last updated 11:33 PM, Sep 25, 2013OGDEN, Utah -- He was in a position of trust as a former junior high teacher and Boy Scout leader, but now 61-year-old Kenneth Prince has been arrested for allegedly possessing child pornography.
Prince spent almost 30 years teaching at South Ogden Junior High until his retirement in 2008.
Two weeks ago, a man came forward alleging Prince sexually abused him when the victim was a teen. It's unclear if he was a student or a scout.
"The original incident happened in the ‘80s, I would suspect it's been going on since then," said South Ogden Police Department Chief Darin Parke.
That tip led police to the former science teacher's home in Uintah last week. Cops served a search warrant, and they said they seized several computers with explicit images of males ages 13 to 17.
"The preliminary analysis showed 5 photos the prosecutor felt was sufficient to file charges," Parke said.
Parke said the victims are all different males, and it's obvious they were aware the photos were being taken. However, it's unclear who took them and whether the suspect downloaded them from the internet.
"At this point we haven't identified who the people are in the photos, but we are considering it child pornography,” he said.
South Ogden resident and mother Tegan Greenfield said she had issues with Prince several years ago.
"There was an incident in 2007 that I tried to bring charges against him," she said.
Greenfield said when her daughter was 13, she attended a party at an Ogden motel. Sisiline Richards said there were several junior high students at the party, and drugs and alcohol were available. Richards said Mr. Prince was there.
"He was sitting in a circle,” Richards said. “They were smoking and drinking.”
She said she didn't see any signs of sexual abuse, but Ogden Police said Prince admitted being there. Police officials said they investigated him for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, but prosecutors declined to file charges in that incident.
However, South Ogden police believe others have been sexually abused and investigators want those victims to come forward.
"For me, I'm glad somebody is doing something because to me I feel like he's been doing this forever and he's always slipped under the radar," Greenfield said.
Salt Lake police had a case with Prince but couldn't offer specific details. They said it was in 2008, the same year Prince retired from teaching.
Investigators also said Prince went to rave dance parties where teens frequented.
It's unclear if students or scouts were victims. Scout Executive Allen Endicott said in a statement, “Mr. Prince has not been a registered leader with the Trapper Trails Council since 2003. As soon as we were made aware of the situation with Mr. Prince by law enforcement, immediate steps were taken to remove his ability to ever again register with the Boy Scouts of America.”
Prince has bailed out of Weber County Jail, and a family member filed a protective order against him.
FOX 13 tried reaching him at his home to get his side of the story. No one answered the door. Meanwhile, the Weber County Attorney said charges could be filed Thursday.

12. Ex-teacher, Boy Scout leader arrested in sex exploitation case
SOUTH OGDEN — A veteran junior high school teacher and former Boy Scout leader has been arrested for investigation of child pornography.
Now police need the public's help finding the man's alleged victims.
Kenneth Prince, 61, was arrested Tuesday for investigation of five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.
Earlier this month, South Ogden police were contacted by a man who claimed that he was sexually abused by Prince more than a decade ago, said South Ogden Police Chief Darin Parke.
"We began an investigation and on (Sept. 19) we obtained a search warrant for Kenneth Prince's home. During that search we found sexually explicit images of minors on his computers," he said.
Three computers were seized. The arrest was based on five sexually explicit photographs of five young boys, all under 18, Parke said. The boys had not been identified as of Tuesday. But the chief said detectives believe some of the images on Prince's computers were photographs taken by Prince himself, and others were images that he downloaded though a file-sharing program.
In each picture, the boys appear to be aware that a photograph was being taken, as opposed to a hidden camera, Parke said. Investigators could not tell if any of the pictures were taken in a school or Scouting setting.
It was unknown Wednesday whether the alleged victims were former students or Boy Scouts. Prince taught at South Ogden Junior High from 1979 until his retirement in 2008 and was a "longtime" Scout leader in the South Ogden area, the chief said.
"Based on the allegations and the evidence we have at this time, we feel there are other victims that have yet to come forward and we would ask that they come forward to help us get a clear picture of what he's been up to," Parke said.
The Weber School District on Wednesday had little information to add, but officials said they would be cooperating fully with the police investigation.
Utah court records show Prince was arrested for obscene acts in 2008 by Salt Lake police. Prince took a plea in abeyance, pleading guilty in June of 2008, and the case was dismissed in 2010.
View CommentsOn Monday, a family member filed a protective order against Prince in 2nd District Court in Ogden. Police listed Prince as currently being a Uintah, Weber County, resident.
Anyone with information on Prince, or any possible victims, is asked to call police at 801-629-8221 and ask for a South Ogden officer.

13. New charges against ex-teacher accused of exploiting children
OGDEN — New charges were filed Wednesday against a former school teacher and Boy Scout leader as he made his first appearance in court on multiple charges of child pornography.
Kenneth William Prince, 61, was charged Wednesday in Ogden's 2nd District Court with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.
A man, now 42, told police he was sexually abused by Prince on multiple occasions when he was between 12 and 17 years old. At the time, Prince was "in a position of trust" over the victim, according to charging documents. Prosecutors did not elaborate about what the position of trust was.
Prince appeared in court Wednesday to face five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony.
Prince taught at South Ogden Junior High School from 1979 until 2008. He retired at the end of the 2008 school year, just a month after being arrested by Salt Lake police when members of the vice squad found him committing a lewd act at a gym, according to a police report. He pleaded guilty to committing an obscene act and the case was dismissed in 2010 as part of his plea in abeyance.
The investigation into Prince started earlier this year when a man reported that he had been molested by Prince more than a decade ago. A subsequent search of Prince's home by police uncovered a laptop with sexually explicit photos of young boys, according to police.
After Prince was arrested in September, he posted bail and allegedly tried to commit suicide. He was hospitalized for ingesting mercury. Last week, he was charged with reckless endangerment and psychotoxic abuse, both misdemeanors, in Logan District Court.
His wife filed for divorce on Oct. 9, according to court records.
View CommentsPrince was arrested again on the sex abuse allegations on Monday. He remained free Wednesday after posting bail again.
At least eight other potential victims contacted police following his first arrest, police said. South Ogden investigators believe there may be additional victims and are encouraging others to call 801-629-8221 if they are a victim or know of a possible victim.

14. Former S. Ogden teacher, BSA leader charged with child sex abuse
SOUTH OGDEN — A former South Ogden teacher and Boy Scout leader was arrested on charges of sexual abuse of child, South Ogden Police said Tuesday.
Kenneth Prince, 61, was booked into Weber County Jail Monday on two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony. If convicted he could face 15 years to life in prison.
Prince was originally arrested Sept. 24 on five counts of sexual exploitation of minor, a second-degree felony.
The charges were a result of images of child pornography reportedly found on his home computer, police said.
South Ogden Police believe there are more victims and are asking anyone who feels they may have been exploited or victimized by Prince to call police dispatch at 801-629-8221.
Prince attempted suicide last month after he drank liquid mercury, police said.
Police officials said Prince also cut himself with a knife after leaving a suicide note.
“He had left a note suggesting he had nothing left to live for and made some apologies to family and that kind of thing,” said Gary Jensen, Police Chief of Logan City Police Department. “He didn’t want to go to prison for the rest of his life.”

15. Charges related to mercury suicide attempt dropped against Utah man
A former teacher and Boy Scout leader who was sent to prison in May for child porn had charges associated with a failed suicide attempt dismissed against him last week.
The day after Kenneth William Prince was arrested last September on suspicion of possessing child pornography, the former science teacher bailed out of jail and tried to kill himself by ingesting mercury, according to police.
After that suicide attempt, he was charged in 1st District Court with misdemeanor reckless endangerment and use or possession of a psychotoxic chemical. The attempt also delayed Prince's initial court appearance in the child porn case because health officials recommended he be quarantined to prevent the risk of contaminating others with mercury poisoning, according to court documents.
A judge sentenced Prince, 61, to five consecutive 1-to-15 year prison terms in May after he pleaded guilty to five counts of second-degree felony sexual exploitation of a minor. Last week, prosecutors in Cache County asked for their case to be dismissed because Prince is already serving a lengthy prison term.
During his May sentencing, prosecutors portrayed him as a sexually deviant man who took pictures of nude Boy Scouts during camping trips over a 30-year period, while defense attorneys instead told of a man who was a great teacher and leader, whose own abuse experiences and mental health issues caused him to struggle with his sexual identity.
Prince had also been charged in Ogden's 2nd District Court with first-degree felony aggravated sexual abuse of a child, but that case was dismissed as part of a plea deal.
Prince was employed as a teacher at South Ogden Junior High School from 1979 to 2008. Police said he also had been a Boy Scout leader for many years in the South Ogden area.

16. Ex-Scout leader attempts suicide amid more allegations of sexual misconduct
SOUTH OGDEN — The case of a former longtime school teacher and Boy Scout leader accused of storing explicit pictures of young boys on his computer is taking on new twists, with more witnesses who have come forward and a botched suicide attempt by the accused.
Suicide attempt
Kenneth Prince, 61, was taken to the hospital and involuntarily committed for a mental health evaluation after being found at a Logan home at about 3 a.m. Thursday with a half-empty bottle of mercury and cuts to his head and wrists, The Herald Journal of Logan reported.
Officers found a note in the home in which Prince apologized to his family for trying to take his life.
The case turned into a hazmat incident as health officials were forced to decontaminate a portion of the police building and homes of some responding officers and medical personnel who were exposed to the mercury, the Standard-Examiner of Ogden reported.
"We go into some of these situations blind and not knowing, and it was one of those situations where you couldn't see the contamination and didn't know it was present," said Asst. Chief Jeff Curtis of the Logan Police Department.
More allegations
Meanwhile, South Ogden Police Chief Darin Parke said Saturday that eight men have contacted investigators after learning about the current criminal charges filed against Prince.
In the latest allegations to surface, the eight men told police that Prince took photos of them when they were students at South Ogden Junior High School, where he was a teacher. A few of the men said they also knew Prince as their Scout leader.
According to Parke, the men who have approached investigators about the case said the photos were taken in a group setting after Prince would convince them it was some official activity. He'd then ask the boys to take their clothes off, Parke said. The pictures were not taken on school property, according to the chief.
Case history
The case against Prince continues to grow after he was charged Thursday in 2nd District Court with five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. The second-degree felonies were lodged after a man reported to police he had been molested by Prince more than a decade ago.
A subsequent search of Prince's home earlier this month revealed a laptop containing sexually explicit photos of young boys.
Prince taught at South Ogden Junior High School from 1979 until 2008. That was the same year Prince was discovered by Salt Lake police in a "lewd act," in a west Salt Lake gym.
Prince retired the next month from his teaching career, but Weber School District officials refused to say if his departure was in any way related to the lewdness incident.
By 2010, the misdemeanor case was dismissed after he was allowed to enter a plea of guilty — which was held in abeyance if he was able to meet the conditions of the court.
Police are asking anyone with information on Prince to call 801-629-8221 and ask to talk to South Ogden investigators.
