  NEPHI — A former history teacher and assistant coach of the Juab High School football team pleaded guilty Wednesday to obstruction of justice after a female student sent him inappropriate pictures, according to court records.

  Shane Blackett, 27, of Nephi, was arrested and resigned from the school in May as the Juab School District investigated "allegations of misconduct involving a student."

  Blackett wasn't charged, however, until Tuesday. He pleaded guilty Wednesday to obstruction of justice, a third-degree felony.

  According to charging documents, a female student admitted to investigators that she "had sent images" to Blackett after he had "solicited inappropriate pictures by phone and she had sent pictures to him" via Snapchat.

  The pictures were sent in either December of 2013 or January of 2014, according to police. After Blackett became aware of the criminal investigation against him, "he took steps to erase evidence of a crime from his phone," the charges state.

  Blackett was a first-year teacher at the school.

  He was sentenced to 10 days in the Juab County Jail, which a judge said could be served "on weekends or days off in at least 48-hour increments" and must be completed by March 31.

  Blackett was also given a suspended prison sentence of up to five years. He was also placed on 36 months of probation, ordered to pay a fine, undergo a psychosexual evaluation by Feb. 21 and complete any recommended treatment and have no contact with the victim or her family, according to court records.

  BLACKETT , of the following counts:

  COUNT I: OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE, a third degree felony, in violation of 76-8-306(c),
  Utah Code Annotated, 1953 as amended in that SHANE BLACKETT, on or about April 28,
  2014, in Juab County, Utah, with the intent to hinder, delay, or prevent the investigation,
  apprehension, prosecution, conviction, or punishment of any person regarding conduct that
  constitutes a criminal offense did alter, destroy, conceal, or remove any item or other thing.
  PROBABLE CAUSE STATEMENT: Jarrod Villar, Nephi Police Officer, having probable cause
  to believe that a crime was committed, submitted evidence in support of the filing of this
  Information. On or about April 28, 2014 in Juab County, Utah, officers became aware of a
  teacher who may have been having inappropriate contact with a female student. Further
  investigation identified the female student. When they interviewed her, she acknowledged that
  she had sent images to the teacher. That the teacher had solicited inappropriate pictures by
  phone and she had sent pictures to him which were a violation of section 76-5b-201. She
  admitted it was solicited and she admitted to sending him these images via snap chat. The
  images were sent in December, 2013 or January, 2014. Officers interviewed Blackett. Blackett
  admitted receiving the inappropriate images in violation of 76-5b-201 from the minor female and
  that he had become aware that a criminal investigation had begun and that he took steps to erase
  evidence of a crime from his phone.

  This information is based on evidence obtained from the following witnesses:

  A former Nephi history teacher will do jail time after admitting to receiving inappropriate pictures from a female student.

  Shane Blackett, 27, was charged in 4th District Court with third-degree felony obstruction of justice Tuesday, and pleaded guilty on Wednesday.

  Judge James Brady immediately sentenced Blackett to 36 months probation and 10 days in the Juab County jail, to be served in 48-hour increments, by March 31.

  About April 28, Nephi police became aware of a Juab High School teacher who "may have been having inappropriate contact with a female student," according to court documents

  When police interviewed her, the girl acknowledged that she sent Blackett solicited pictures through Snapchat, a photo-messaging app, in December and January.

  Blackett also admitted to police that he received inappropriate images from the girl. He also admitted that he became aware of the criminal investigation and had taken steps to erase "evidence of a crime" from his phone, according to the court documents.

  Blackett resigned from the school in May. He had been at the school for one year, and was also an assistant football coach, said Juab School District Superintendent Rick Robins.

  NEPHI — A first-year history teacher and assistant coach of the Juab High School football team has resigned amid a criminal investigation.

  The coach, who had not been arrested or charged as of Friday, was placed on administrative leave last week by the Juab School District and resigned sometime that afternoon or the next morning, according to Superintendent Rick Robins.

  Robins said the teacher was accused of "allegations of misconduct involving a student." The case was turned over to the Nephi Police Department, which confirmed Friday that a criminal investigation is being conducted. Investigators, however, had no other details to release.

  The allegations were brought to the attention of the school district last week.

  "It's still very early in the investigation. Obviously I'm disappointed and not happy with it. But we're moving forward with the investigation," Robins said.
