Source type: News articleSALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A Salt Lake City Police officer is facing charges related to sexual assault after reportedly inviting a woman to his home to watch a “religious Christmas devotional.”
According to court documents, Zander Nunley, 26, was arrested in Utah County on Wednesday, Dec. 12, after a report was made that he had sexually assaulted a woman who he’d met on an online dating app.
Nunley and the woman had allegedly been speaking for two to three weeks before meeting in person the night of Dec. 8, where it was planned for them to watch the Christmas devotional according to the probable cause statement.
The statement goes on that Nunley had told the woman that he was a police officer in their text conversation, and upon arrival at his home in American Fork, he said he had put all of his firearms away.
The woman in the report said that Nunley quickly began kissing her and that he was doing so rather aggressively, “as if he didn’t know his own strength.” According to the statement, Nunley and the woman had communicated they wouldn’t touch each other in certain places and he allegedly pushed these boundaries.
Court documents then detail the allegedly aggressive behavior that reportedly impacted the woman’s ability to breathe and left several visible bruises.
After the alleged assault, the woman was picked up by a friend and later examined by a forensic nurse at a hospital in Utah County. The nurse reported finding bruising around her neck and other areas consistent with the events described. This was later reported to police.
A Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson later confirmed that Nunley is an officer with the department, and had been placed on paid administrative leave.
“On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) received information about a criminal investigation and the arrest of one of our officers,” Brent Weisberg, communications director for SLCPD, said in a statement shared with ABC4.com. “Upon learning of this information, the SLCPD promptly placed the officer on paid administrative leave. The allegations in this case are serious and conflict with our core values.”
Nunley was booked into the Utah County Jail on third-degree felony aggravated assault, second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse, first-degree felony forcible sodomy, and first-degree felony object rape.
