Lynn Egley was a Mormon bishop in Benson, Utah. In 2018, Egley was publicly accused by a relative of child sexual abuse. The alleged abuse occurred in the 1990s, prior to Egley’s time as bishop.
The Mormon Stories Podcast published three episodes in 2018 discussing allegations against Egley. The episodes also discussed the ways in which LDS church leaders, including area Authority Seventy Steven O. Laing, responded to the allegations.
Despite being made aware of the allegations against Egley, church officials allegedly failed to remove him from his position as bishop.

1. When the Church Protects Abusers – Jared and Juli Egley – Alleged Abuser is Current Bishop | Ep. 991-993
oin us as we begin a new series on instances where the LDS Church protects alleged abusers instead of advocating for their victims.
Trigger warning: This interview discusses sexual assault. Please practice self care, and use discretion regarding who else listens in.
In Part 1 of this interview, Jared shares how he was allegedly sexually abused as a young boy by his uncle and how these experiences formed the basis for his most vivid memories. Jared also talks about the guilt and shame he carried from those experiences throughout his youth and through his LDS mission. As Jared progresses through life, he feels he has forgiven his uncle and was ready to move on, until his uncle was called as a bishop and given stewardship over a ward, including children. Feeling pressure to say something, Jared finally told his wife Juli of the abuse he suffered decades earlier.
In Part 2 of this interview, Jared and Juli discuss multiple meetings and interactions with LDS Church leaders including multiple stake presidents and bishops, and a private meeting with Elder Steven O. Laing of the Seventy (recorded by Jared and Juli and presented as Part 3 of this interview) to warn them of his uncle’s alleged history of abuse. During this meeting, both Jared and Juli were still true believing members, but now regard the inaction taken by their priesthood leaders and instead focusing on their personal faith as a major tipping point for their testimonies. As of today, Jared’s uncle remains bishop in a northern Utah ward.

2. "When the Church Protects Abusers - Jared and Juli Egley" - Mormon Stories Podcast. Alleged abuser is current bishop in Northern Utah. Episode includes recorded interview with then Area Authority Seventy Steven O. Laing, who is currently Brigham City Temple President.
In this powerful and poignant Mormon Stories Podcast episode, Jared Egley shares:
- His memories of being sexually abused multiple times as a young boy by his teenage uncle (a current, sitting Mormon bishop in Northern Utah),
- How he was always afraid/ashamed to report the abuse, and
- How the abuse negatively affected him as a teen and young adult.
Eventually, Jared came to accept his uncle's past, until the day his uncle was called as a bishop of a Northern Utah ward without ever having repented for the abuse. This caused Jared to tell someone for the first time about the abuse (his wife, Julianna Egley), and sent his Mormon faith in "priesthood discernment" into a tailspin.
Jared's motivation for telling his story has nothing to do with his uncle, but instead has everything to do with the outrageous way he (as a person reporting abuse) was treated by his local bishop, two stake presidents, and two general authorities when he reported the abuse - with delays, denials, and an unwillingness to take any action.
Super Important: Part three of this interview includes a recording of Jared's private meeting Elder Steven O. Laing (of the Area Seventy at the time), who is currently serving as President of the Brigham City Temple.
As of today, Jared’s uncle remains bishop. Jared is a successful pilot, father, and husband - and has nothing to gain by telling his story, other than to help protect future victims. Whether you believe Jared's story or not, this is a stunning and tragic example of how the Mormon church is structured to protect abusers at the expense of victims.

4. Anyone know what happened after the Jared Egley accusations went public on Mormon Stories?
THIS IS FROM JARED. HE IS WAITING FOR HIS REDDIT ACCOUNT TO ALLOW POSTING. SHARING WITH HIS PERMISSION.
This is Jared. I’ll give you a quick update. He is still the Bishop. We continued to push for his release until about January 2019. We were finally told that nothing would be done so we stopped pushing through church leaders. My Bishop was very upset that we “went public” and did not speak to us for months. Our SP was very understanding but “saddened” that we felt we needed to speak out via Mormon Stories. My SP informed me that “Salt Lake” had called and asked him if there was a need for a disciplinary council for my wife and I because of our public opposition to the brethren. He told them no and that instead they should drive up to Idaho and apologize to us. 😂. I continue to have a good relationship with our SP but rarely talk with our old Bishop. After the MS podcast was released there were some members in my uncles Stake who began to ask leaders about what was happening. I have heard (still not verified but almost 100% sure) Elder Funk from the area presidency along with President Ballard (SP in the Benson Stake) told the High Council as well as all Bishops in the Stake to inform members who questioned that, “ The brethren are aware of the issue and it has been handled properly despite what Jared and Juli Egley have stated.“. I know of one member who was told that we had left the church and were in public opposition to the church while my uncle still remained a faithful serving Bishop and that they should support the Brethren by supporting my Uncle, not apostates. 😏 Myself, my wife, and our 4 children have not attended church since April 2018. We feel it is a place that is not safe for children and have no desire to support an organization that protects abusers and harms victims of abuse. Life for us has become something we never thought it would. Our relationship with our children is amazingly open and honest. Despite what we thought as active Mormons, our children are thriving without the “gospel”. My wife and I are closer than we have ever been in our marriage. Life for us is amazingly great now without the baggage that the church added to our lives and marriage. It appears my Uncle will serve out his term as Bishop in the Benson Utah ward. Our immediate family has been great and very supportive. My dad was on the High Council when all of this came out and has been amazing to us. About half of the extended family will not speak or have much to do with us because of our views and public opposition to the church. Most of our ward members and neighbors are nice but in our small community we are known as the “apostates”. Fine with me. Honestly we think very little of the church these days and don’t really give a shit what they do or say. We are just glad we aren’t there anymore.
