  SAN BERNARDINO >> A former San Bernardino middle school teacher was sentenced Monday in federal court to 10 years in prison following his conviction for sexual exploitation of minors and producing child pornography.

  Eugene Ballantyne, 30, of Running Springs, who taught social studies at Arrowview Middle School, pleaded guilty in July 2012 to one count of attempting to entice a minor to engage in illicit sexual activity, according to prosecutors.

  He was sentenced during proceedings held in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, according to court records.

  Ballantyne met his 13-year-old victim from New Jersey in an Internet chat room and immediately began sending her nude photos of himself, according to the criminal complaint. Early on, he started asking her to send pornographic photos of herself to him, officials said.

  The complaint alleges that Ballantyne persuaded his victims to engage in sexual activity while they spoke in the chat room, take photographs of the sex act and email the explicit photos to him.

  Armed with a federal search warrant, agents seized Ballantyne’s computer where they discovered he was having several online relationships with several minors, according to the news release.

  Multiple pornographic photos of his victims, including a former student, were found saved on his computer, authorities added.

  He posed as an 18-year-old in order to convince a 15-year-old victim to send him the graphic images and admitted to traveling to Blythe to have a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old victim, prosecutors said in the statement.

  “Ballantyne committed these acts in a “callous manner” and described the need for the sentence to deter other internet predators,” Judge George H. King said during the sentencing.
