1. 20-year-old teacher's aide accused of sexual contact with student
OGDEN — A teacher's aide was charged Wednesday with engaging in sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old student.
Zachary John Arrington, 20, of West Haven, was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail Tuesday. He was charged Wednesday in 2nd District Court with sex abuse of a minor, a third-degree felony; two counts of dealing in harmful materials to a minor, a third-degree felony; sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony; obstruction of justice, a third-degree felony; and enticing, seducing or luring a minor by text or Internet, a class A misdemeanor.
Arrington was an aide at Quest Academy in West Haven, 4862 W. 4000 South, according to the Weber County Sheriff's Office. As part of his duties, he was a lunchroom monitor. His contact with the girl started as "casual conversation," according to investigators.
"During this time he befriended this 14-year-old female there. And apparently that relationship evolved that they started conversing, sending information over Snapchat. Some of that was sexually oriented in nature. That relationship continued outside of the school where they met numerous times at a park out there in West Haven. And during those times there was some inappropriate physical contact between them," said Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Lane Findlay.
"That relationship evolved that they started conversing, sending information over Snapchat. Some of that was sexually oriented in nature. That relationship continued outside of the school where they met numerous times at a park out there in West Haven. And during those times there was some inappropriate physical contact between them."
–Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Lane FindlayAccording to charging documents, the two engaged in a dare-like "game" where each would send pictures of themselves wearing one less item of clothing than the other person's previous Snapchat picture until they weren't wearing anything.
The two also engaged in sexting, according to the charges. At one point, Arrington tried to go to the girl's house for the purpose of having sex, "but had a hard time finding her house" and once he got there was advised that the girl's father was almost home, according to police.
Findlay said all of the alleged illegal activity happened outside of school grounds. The girl was not in any of the classes in which Arrington was a teacher's aide, and Arrington was not considered to have a position of trust over her as a lunchroom monitor, he said.
The illegal activity was discovered after other students started circulating a picture on social media of Arrington and the young girl kissing, according to the charges.
"There were some rumors that started spreading around the school, some of that through social media. And so that came to light in October with the school and we were contacted," Findlay said.
Arrington was fired from the school shortly after the incident was reported to the sheriff's office. He later admitted to investigators that he erased the pictures and other evidence that was on his phone, according to the charges.
"We just always encourage if they're seeing something inappropriate or get information about someone, don't hesitate to come forward."
–Sgt. FindlayAlthough Arrington was not considered to be in a position of trust over the girl, because she was 14, and because there was a six-year age difference between the two, and because nude images were exchanged over the phone, he was arrested, Findlay said.
The incident, he said, is a good reminder for juveniles and and parents to be leery of the dangers of social media, and for juveniles to speak up if they notice something potentially inappropriate.
"We just always encourage if they're seeing something inappropriate or get information about someone, don't hesitate to come forward," Findlay said.
The Weber and Ogden school districts began a program this year allowing students to send texts anonymously to report crimes. Students can text 274637, type the keyword “friends," then a space and the school they attend, before reporting an incident.
An initial appearance in court is scheduled for Dec. 16.

4. Former Utah teacher’s aide get jail time for ‘sexting’ with teen student
Ogden • A former teacher's assistant at a Weber County public charter school was sentenced to jail Tuesday for having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old student.
Zachary Arrington, 21, pleaded guilty in April to third-degree felony attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, third-degree felony obstructing justice and a reduced class A misdemeanor count of attempted dealing in material harmful to a minor. Three other charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal.
On Tuesday, 2nd District Judge Noel Hyde sentenced Arrington — who worked at Quest Academy in West Haven — to serve 180 days in the Weber County jail, along with 36 months probation. The judge granted the man work release from the jail after 20 days served, and said he could begin day-reporting to the jail once he had served 60 days of his sentence.
Arrington was immediately handcuffed and taken to the jail after the hearing.
Before the sentence was handed down, Arrington apologized for the inappropriate relationship.
"I truly am really, really sorry for my mistake," Arrington told the judge. "I do take responsibility for it. I assure you it won't happen again."
Arrington admitted in plea documents that he sent the girl a picture of his genitals, received a nude picture of the girl, and that he deleted texts, pictures and contact information from his cell phone.

Cole said Arrington deleted the victim's information from his phone "out of a sense of panic" after he was confronted at the charter school, before law enforcement was informed of the relationship.
According to charging documents, the girl told police in November that Arrington began contacting her through text and the cellphone social media app SnapChat. They met several times in a park, she said, and he kissed her on the forehead.
Police say the relationship then progressed into something more sexual.
"Several conversations were found [on their phones] that were sexual in nature and consisted of talk about how Zachary and the victim wanted to perform different sexual acts with each other," according to charges.
When Arrington was interviewed by police in early November, he allegedly admitted to talking about showering with the teen and performing oral sex on one another, and admitted to sending two pictures of his genitals to the girl on SnapChat.
Arrington also admitted to police that he met the girl in a West Haven park, where they "laid on top of each other and would put pressure on each other's pelvic area," according to charges.
Arrington also told police that he once went to the teen's home with the intention of having sex, but he had a hard time finding the house and once he arrived, was told the girl's father would be home soon, according to charges.
The former teacher's aide was fired from the charter school in October, according to police.

5. Former teacher’s aide arrested for alleged sexual relationship with 14-year-old student
WEST HAVEN, Utah – Police have arrested a man who is accused of having sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl he met while working as a teacher’s aide.
According to a press release from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Zachary Arrington was arrested Tuesday and faces numerous felony charges relating to an alleged sexual relationship with a teen girl.
Arrington was employed as a teacher’s aide and staff assistant at Quest Academy, which is a public charter school in West Haven. The man befriended the teen girl after meeting her in the lunchroom, and the release states a relationship developed between the two of them that continued outside of school.
The man allegedly had inappropriate conversations with the teen via text messages and social media and exchanged pornographic photos through Snapchat. The release states the two, “also met at a local park on numerous occasions where they engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct.”
School officials were made aware of the relationship after rumors began to circulate at the school, and an investigation ensued after school officials contacted police.
Arrington was fired in October of this year after the allegations came to light, and the man eventually confessed to detectives that he had been involved in the relationship.
The release states there is no evidence to indicate that criminal or inappropriate conduct occurred at the school, and they said they do not believe there were other students involved.
Dave Bullock, Principal of Quest Academy, issued a statement in the press release from police.
“The arrest of staff assistant Zachary Arrington comes as a surprise to us,” he stated. “A background check was completed and cleared at the time this employee was hired.”
Arrington was booked into the Weber County Jail and faces the following charges: sexual abuse of a minor as a third-degree felony, sexual exploitation of a minor as a second-degree felony, obstruction of justice as a third-degree felony, two counts of dealing in harmful materials to a minor as a third-degree felony and a misdemeanor count of enticing a minor.

6. Ex-teaching assistant sentenced for ‘sexting’ with student
OGDEN — A former teaching assistant who pleaded guilty to felony charges involving sexual exploitation with a student at his school was sentenced to 180 days incarceration and 36 months probation at Ogden Second District Court Tuesday.
Zachary John Arrington, 20, of West Haven said in statements to the judge at the hearing that the offense was abnormal for his life.
“I truly am very sorry for it,” Arrington said at the hearing. “I was in a very dark place in my life but I feel like I am in a good place right now and am making good progress.”
Judge Noel Hyde sentenced Arrington to an initial 60-day incarceration at Weber County Jail and a 120 days of day-reporting to the jail. Hyde also restricted any work release for Arrington’s initial 20 days in prison. Arrington was taken into custody immediately following the hearing.
Arrington pleaded guilty on April 28 to three third-degree felony charges — one count of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, one count of attempted dealing in harmful materials to a minor and one count of obstruction of justice.
The Weber County Attorney’s Office dismissed two other felonies and a misdemeanor charge in exchange for the guilty pleas.
Arrington was a teaching assistant employed with the public charter school Quest Academy in West Haven and had a relationship with a 14-year-old girl who attended the school, according to officials. The relationship began in September, court records indicate.
Arrington received an inappropriate photograph of a 14-year-old girl who was a student at the school, and he also sent an inappropriate photograph if himself to the girl, according to prosecutors at the April 28 court hearing.
Quest Academy fired Arrington in October 2014 after the accusations were revealed and Arrington was booked in the Weber County Jail on Dec. 9.
Quest Academy Principal Dave Bullock said in a prepared statement at the time of Arrington’s arrest, “The arrest of staff assistant Zachary Arrington comes as a surprise to us. A background check was completed and cleared at the time this employee was hired.”
Arrington does not have a prior criminal history and served no jail time prior Tuesday’s hearing, according to court records.
