LOGAN — A 67-year-old Hyrum man has been arrested for allegedly molesting a young girl multiple times, according to law enforcement. Carlos Whitney Kartchner was booked Friday into the Cache County Jail.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, in May, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies received a report of possible sex abuse at a Hyrum residence. The alleged victim claimed Kartchner, a family acquaintance, had inappropriately touched her on multiple occasions since 2022.
The woman described being groped and molested when she was a teenager. The incidents allegedly occurred while she was visiting the suspect’s family.
The alleged victim later confronted Kartchner through text messages. He reportedly admitted to the criminal behavior and wrote a letter of apology. The messages and letter were later given to deputies, according to the arrest report.
In August, the alleged victim participated in a recorded telephone call with Kartchner. After confronting him about the incidents, the Hyrum man reportedly admitted to the illegal actions, repeatedly saying he was sorry.

Cache County Sheriff’s OfficeDeputies arrested Carlos Kartchner, 67, on Sept. 5 for allegedly inappropriately touching a female relative on two separate occasions in 2022.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the woman contacted law enforcement in May. She reportedly told police Kartchner groped her under her clothing on two occasions when she was visiting the family in Hyrum.
The woman reportedly confronted Kartchner through text messages following the second incident. She provided police with copies of the text conversation in which Kartchner acknowledges his behavior to her, as well as a copy of an apology letter he wrote her.
According to the affidavit, during a recorded confrontation call on Aug. 27, Kartchner admitted to inappropriately touching her and repeatedly told the woman how sorry he was.
Kartchner is being charged with two counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony. Following his initial appearance, he was released on bail, on the condition he have no contact with the complainant.
His next court appearance is set for Sept. 24.
Utah Highway PatrolPreston-resident Nathaniel Stan Haudley-Resendiz, 20, is facing second-degree felony manslaughter charges, among others, in connection with a car crash near Lewiston that killed two people in Dec. 2024.
Following an investigation into the crash, Cache County Attorney’s Office filed a case against Haudley-Resendiz on Aug. 11, and a First District judge subsequently issued a warrant for his arrest.
According to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden, officers served the warrant Saturday, when Haudley-Resendiz was booked into the Cache County Jail on unrelated charges.
According to the affidavit for arrest warrant, on Dec. 15, 2024, Haudley-Resendiz was driving southbound on U.S. 91 near Lewiston when he crossed into the northbound lanes, colliding head-on with another vehicle.
The female driver of the other vehicle died on scene. A nine-month-old child in the rear passenger seat of Haudley-Resendiz’s vehicle was transported by helicopter to a hospital but later died from his injuries.
According to the affidavit, Haudley-Resendiz had THC in his blood at the time of the crash and was driving without a valid license. Officers also found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.
Haudley-Resendiz was not restrained when the crash occurred, and the child in the back seat was not properly restrained. Investigators also found the vehicle was operating on a spare left rear tire, traveling at a speed not recommended for the spare.
The attorney’s office is charging Haudley-Resendiz with two counts of manslaughter and one count of knowingly producing, dispensing or manufacturing a controlled substance, all second-degree felonies.
He is facing seven additional misdemeanor and infraction charges related to the crash.
His initial appearance is scheduled for Sept. 17 before First District Judge Brian Cannell.
UpdatesKenneth Ray Mayfield pled not guilty Monday to one count of object rape of a child and one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, both first-degree felonies.
His next court appearance is set for Sept. 29. He is being held in the Cache County Jail.
Officers arrested Mayfield June 30 for allegedly touching his niece inappropriately on multiple occasions.
First District Judge Spencer Walsh found Sawal Sawal guilty of two counts of forcible sexual abuse, amended to a third-degree felony; sexual battery, amended to a class-A misdemeanor; assault with substantial bodily injury, a class-A misdemeanor; and lewdness, a class-B misdemeanor.
On Sept. 5, Walsh sentenced Sawal to serve two years in jail, followed by four years of probation. Court documents noted Sawal may be released to Immigration and Customs Enforcement after one year served.
Officers arrested Sawal April 24 for repeatedly sexually harassing a female coworker.
David Anthony Scruggs was sentenced Aug. 18 to serve 15 days in the Cache County Jail and two years of probation for distribution of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony, and unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon, a class-A misdemeanor.
Walsh suspended the prison sentence and majority of the jail time for the charges. Instead, he ordered Scruggs to serve the remaining jail and probation time, pay a $1,000 fine, avoid any alcohol or drugs, and comply with recommended mental health treatment.
Scruggs was initially arrested April 9 after officers discovered a range of illegal substances in his vehicle during a traffic stop.
On Aug. 11, Ashley Michelle Hard entered a plea in abeyance to one count of assault, one count of fail to stop at command of law enforcement and one count of domestic violence in the presence of a child.
All remaining charges against her were dismissed, including charges for child kidnapping, interfering with a peace officer, a second count of domestic violence in the presence of a child, and disorderly conduct.
The court ordered Hard to enter into a probation agreement with Cache County Probation, complete a substance and alcohol assessment as well as a mental health assessment, and complete all recommended treatment.
A plea in abeyance review is set for Aug. 10, 2026. If all conditions are met, the charges will be dismissed.
Hard was arrested April 8 following a family dispute.
The court dismissed with prejudice all charges against Bryson Tyler Alleman on July 15 and closed the case against him.
Alleman was arrested April 16 after a woman accused him of raping her.
