Jerry Reid Mills was a Mormon church member and returned missionary, and a career US State Department diplomat who retired to the San Antonio, Texas area. He and his wife adopted ten children from countries where he had been stationed, including Peru, Guatemala, Portugal, Spain and Costa Rica.
He sexually abused one of his adopted daughters; she disclosed the abuse to a trusted adult who reported it to police and child protective services, and all minor children in the household were removed.
An investigation began in January 2023; when he learned of it, Mills fled the state and was later arrested in Oklahoma City. He was convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a child and sentenced to 20 years in prison. According to the person who reported the case, he held a temple recommend and was a member in good standing throughout.
