Nelson was from Milwaukee who was hired by CARE.com as a babysitter for a family with two boys, both children were under the age of 12.

Convicted in 2015 and sentenced to 35 years in prison. Prosecutors stated there would be no chance at early parole.  According to the Oregon Department of Corrections Nelson’s earliest release date is 05/10/2048.

According to someone familiar with Nelson they reported he was a student at Brigham Young University- Hawaii, and participated as an ambassador of the Barbara Barrington Jones Family Foundation’s International Institute of Professional Protocol, a program that places young professionals in internship experiences in Utah Valley.

    PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon babysitter accused of sexually abusing multiple young victims has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

    KPTV-TV reports that 27-year-old Benjamin Nelson pleaded guilty Monday to charges of attempted sex abuse, sodomy and encouraging child sex abuse. Additional charges against him were dropped as part of a plea deal.

    Court documents say Nelson admitted sexually abusing two boys under the age of 14 earlier this year. A third child was victimized between June 2014 and May 2015.

    Prosecutors argued that Nelson, who had been hired through a babysitting website, used the job to gain access to children.

    Nelson has no previous criminal history.

    In addition to his 35-year sentence, he must register as a sex offender.

    A 27-year-old Milwaukie man was sentenced to 35 years in prison for sexually abusing and sodomizing two boys he babysat after being hired by the boy's mother through the Care.com website.

    Benjamin Evan Nelson was arrested in May on six counts of first-degree sexual abuse, five counts of first-degree sodomy and luring a minor involving the boys who were under the age of 12 from January 1 through April 10 in Multnomah County.

    In a plea hearing before Judge Eric Bergstrom, Nelson pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree sodomy, two counts of encouraging first-degree sexual abuse and attempt to commit a class-B felony.

    PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 27-year-old former babysitter who committed sex crimes against children will spend the next 35 years in prison.

    Benjamin Evan Nelson was transferred Tuesday to the Oregon Department of Corrections. On Monday, he was sentenced after pleading guilty in three different cases. In all, Nelson admitted to committing two counts of first-degree sodomy, one count of attempted first-degree sexual abuse and two counts of first-degree encouraging child sexual abuse.

    Nelson, who used to live in Southeast Portland, was arrested in May 2015. According to a report filed by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Nelson was working as a child caregiver and “was identified as a safe person who parents could trust to care for their children.”

    Records show Nelson used the website CARE.com to “gain access to children.” The website, according to the report, says potential workers on the site are cleared through a background check, but that parents are responsible for hiring them.

    When the report was made, the mother of one of the children involved in the case told deputies she felt Nelson “is a very ill person and needs help,” according to records.

    A Multnomah County grand jury indicted Nelson on three separate cases. In May, he was charged with first-degree sodomy, first-degree sexual abuse, and luring a minor. In August, he was charged with using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, first-degree sodomy, first-degree unlawful sexual penetration, first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree encouraging child sexual abuse.

    A representative for CARE.com provided KOIN 6 News with the following statement:

    “This is a highly disturbing matter and our thoughts are with the family. We have been working with law enforcement and since there is still an open investigation related to this individual, we will not comment further.”

  • 7. Babysitter to spend 35 years in prison for sexually abusing kids in his care

    PORTLAND, Ore. -- A babysitter admitted to molesting three children in his care. Benjamin Nelson, 27, pleaded guilty to first degree felonies of sodomy and sexual abuse.

    "They want to have access, they want to keep it a secret, and they want to be able to do it again," said Marieka Farrenkopf, who is a licensed child abuse therapist. "They're going to tell children not to tell, and they'll gradually de-sensitize the children to what they want to do."

    Prosecutors say the families found Nelson through Care.com - the 27-year-old's background check was clean. The company's statement reads: "This is a highly disturbing matter and our thoughts are with the family. We have been working with law enforcement and since there is still an open investigation related to this individual, we will not comment further."

    Farrenkopf says, establish rules and boundaries as early as you can.

    "When parents are having these safety talks with children, often and appropriately, then kids know what the rules are. So when you leave your child with a baby sitter you can say - rather he's in charge - say, the same rules apply as when I'm here," she said.

    She adds, the more open you are, the better.

    "When they know the rules the message you want to give them is it's okay to tell, because if something happens, you want them to tell," Farrenkopf said.

    If they do not tell you, or cannot tell because they are too young, Farrenkopf says changes in your child's behavior are a tell-tale sign something is not right.

    "That's a good time to check in. Has something changed? Is a new person around them?"

    Prosecutors say Nelson will spend 35 years in prison, with no chance of early release.
