Steve Boyd Sex Crime charge information
A police probable cause statement in Steve Boyd’s case says:
“On October 26, 2023 in Utah County, the defendant made contact on Chatib with an officer posing as a 13 year old girl (hereinafter “UC”). After initial greetings, the UC told the defendant she was 13 years old. The defendant said that didn’t bother him and further demonstrated he knew her age by asking her how school was. The defendant turned the conversation sexual and asked the UC if she wanted to [redacted by FLOODLIT]. When the UC agreed, the defendant questioned her about her sexual history and asked when they could meet up to have sex. The defendant asked the UC if she could skip school the following day to meet him, and when the UC said the school calls home if she misses, he arranged to meet her that night. The defendant asked the UC how long she could be gone and when she said 30-45 minutes he said they could have sex in the backseat of his car. The defendant asked for the UC’s phone number and moved the conversation to texting. The defendant asked the UC for a photo and the UC sent two photos that had been age regressed. The defendant then sent a photo of his face and of his crotch.”
UPDATE May 21, 2025
“The Unfortunate Events:” A Mormon Bishop’s Letter of Support for a Sex Offender
Floodlit has an update on Stephen Boyd of Eagle Mountain, Utah a Mormon church member and 1991 Brigham Young University (BYU) graduate. Boyd pleaded guilty on April 7, 2025 to felony enticement of a minor. But the court held the plea in abeyance, meaning Boyd can avoid a conviction and harsher penalties if he complies with the terms.
According to a police affidavit, in late 2023 Boyd made contact in an online chat with an undercover police officer, we will call her Helen, posing as a 13 year old girl. After initial greetings, Helen told Boyd she was 13 years old. Boyd said that didn’t bother him and asked her how school was. He turned the conversation sexual and asked Helen if she wanted to engage in sexual acts with him. Helen agreed. Boyd asked her about her sexual history and asked when they could meet up and have sex. He asked if Helen could skip school the next day to meet him and Helen said the school calls home if she misses. Boyd arranged to meet her that night instead. He asked how long she could be gone and she answered 30-45 minutes. He said they could have sex in the back seat of his car. He asked for Helen’s phone number and moved the conversation to texting. He asked Helen for a photo and she sent him two photos that had been age regressed. Boyd then sent Helen a photo of his face and of his crotch.
On May 20, 2025, the plea in abeyance took effect for three years, during which Boyd must be on the Utah sex offender registry. He was ordered to serve 90 days in Utah County Jail and was given credit for 7 days. He is to report by June 2 at 5pm. If Boyd complies with the terms of his plea in abeyance he will not be convicted and would no longer be required to be a registered sex offender. Floodlit has seen similar cases where criminal convictions or guilty pleas were expunged in Utah. Expungement would mean the court system would treat a perpetrator as if the alleged crime was never prosecuted. And a search for criminal records would come up empty.
We have obtained a letter of support from Boyd’s LDS bishop to the judge, and have included it on the photos section on this page.
Floodlit has obtained dozens of similar letters from Mormon bishops and Stake Presidents to judges in support of men who were convicted of sex crimes, including child sex abuse. To date we have not seen a single statement in any of those letters expressing sympathy or support for victims.
