Case report

James B. was a Mormon bishop in Newport Beach, California from about 1990 to 1995.

In 2024, B. was accused in a civil lawsuit of child sexual abuse.

The suit was one of 91 or more coordinated civil suits filed in California in 2024 against the Mormon church alleging child sexual abuse by a Mormon church leader or member.

Bishop James B. told the victim that he (the 12-year-old victim) “had been chosen by God” to engage in sex acts with the bishop, according to the complaint.

The alleged abuse continued every week at the church in the bishop’s office for five years, from 1990 to 1995, the suit said.
