1. Former Student Charged With Sex Offense
A former BYU student was charged Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, with using the Internet to solicit sex with a minor.
Daniel G. Duke, 18, attempted to meet a 13-year-old girl on Jan. 11, 2006 in Salt Lake County, not knowing the 'girl' was actually an undercover agent of the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Based on his online conversations, the Utah General Attorney''s office says Duke planned to have sexual relations with the girl.
He told investigators he had been feeling lonely and jealous of his college friends'' sexual escapades over Christmas break, according to a statement released by Paul Amann, assistant attorney general.
Duke faces two second-degree and two third-degree felony counts of enticing a minor over the Internet. If convicted on second-degree charges, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
The Sandy native is the first person to be arrested in 2006 by the ICAC Task Force. Last year, 60 people were arrested for enticing children over the Internet, child pornography and child sex abuse.
According to Ken Wallentine, chief of law enforcement for the attorney general, the 60 arrests last year represents a fair average of yearly arrests by the ICAC force. Utah typically arrests more Internet sexual predators, per capita, than any other state, he said.
'There are more computers per household than any other state. There are more children per capita than any other state,' Wallentine said, suggesting a reason Utah has such a high rate of arrests. 'And our task force is the best in the nation at tracking down offenders. They work very hard.'
The task force operates under the direction of the attorney general, often corroborating with several officers in various police departments.
'The bulk of the work and credit goes to our undercover agents,' Wallentine said. 'But we couldn''t do it without the help of other officers.'
In this case, it was the work of Special Agent David K. White, an investigator assigned to the ICAC force since 1999, that led to Duke''s arrest. After being contacted by Duke in a Yahoo chat room, White introduced himself as a young girl from Murray. White played along with Duke''s graphic suggestions, a meeting time was set up, and officers detained Duke and booked him in jail late Jan. 11.
Duke was registered as a freshman student in the fall of 2005, said BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins, but he is not currently registered. His BYU information shows him as residing in Helaman Halls last semester.
According to Wallentine, Duke arrived at the meeting place in a BYU hat and shirt.

2. Suspected Sex Predator Arrested
(KSL News) -- The Utah Attorney General's Office made its first internet sex predator bust for 2006.
Daniel Duke, a Provo college student, is now behind bars, facing charges of enticing a minor over the internate.
The Attorney General's Office says an undercover agent with the Utah Internet Crimes Task Force posed as an underage girl and talked with Duke.
He was arrested last week when he tried to meet the girl in person in Salt Lake County. -
3. Ex-BYU student charged with Internet-sex meeting
A former Brigham Young University student was charged Thursday with using the Internet to arrange to have sex with a young girl.
Daniel G. Duke, 18, was arrested Jan. 11 when he allegedly attempted to meet the girl, who was, in fact, an undercover agent with the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. He had previously mentioned to the girl during an online conversation that he wanted to engage in a sexual relationship with her, according to a statement from the office of the Utah Attorney General's Office.
Duke, from Sandy, was enrolled as a student at BYU last semester but is no longer registered, BYU Spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said. "For that reason, no honor code review is taking place."
Duke faces two second-degree and two third-degree felony counts of enticing a minor over the Internet.
View CommentsHe is the first arrest for the task force this year. In 2005, the task force arrested 60 people for enticing children over the Internet, child sex abuse and child pornography.
